This blanking panel is a piece of plastic or metal that will go into an empty spot in the HP BLC7000 or BLC3000 chassis. They will remain in place until a time when a new server or another piece of equipment needs to go in. At that point, the blanking panel will come out, and the server takes its place.
Key points to note on these 578715-002 HP Blank Fillers:-
A BladeSystem c7000 Enclosure holds up to 16 server blades and up to 8 compute, storage or workstation blades plus redundant network and storage interconnects.
It includes a shared, multi-terabit high-speed midplane for wire-once connectivity of server blades to network and shared storage.
These blanking panels are sometimes called filler panels as they are designed to fill the openings in server chassis (enclosure) that are not in use. This provides security as well as physical protection for the equipment in the enclosure.
These blanking panels can also be vented or solid and come with or without hinges.
We made use of these when we realized that the empty slots in our C3000 chassis were preventing the air flowing evenly and removing the heat very efficiently. The enclosure operate properly only when all the slots are full. If there is an opening in any of the bays, the air flow will not perform as designed, and besides, it was was looking yawning ugly ! These blanks assisted us in avoiding the tornado effect-where air hits an unexpected opening and blows in the wrong direction. This can create an area in the rack where the air spins in place rather than blows out. This obviously disrupts the cooling effects. Our enclosure is now dead silent in the server room.
