Or what COVID-19 stands for? Or what it means when an\n employee says they are now a PUM? Neither did we until we started this \nglossary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We will be updating this list of pandemic terms frequently over the \nnext few weeks to help you pick the right words when creating your \ncrisis communication emails, newsletters, phone scripts and <a href=\"https:\/\/searchmobilecomputing.techtarget.com\/Guide-to-telecommuting-during-the-coronavirus-pandemic\">advice for telecommuting<\/a>. We hope our simple explanations will help you use this &#8216;new to us&#8217; vocabulary clearly and concisely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have also included terms your employees might use when \ncommunicating with you. If you know of any terms we&#8217;ve missed or would like to help us clarify usage for the terms we&#8217;ve included, please <a href=\"mailto:mrouse@techtarget.com\">contact us<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Covid-19 Pandemic Glossary<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)<\/strong> &#8211; the U.S. government agency responsible for tracking and confirming the spread of COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Cohorting<\/strong> &#8212; isolating patients who have tested positive for COVID-19 in the same designated area of a healthcare facility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Community spread<\/strong> &#8212; some people in a specific area \nhave been infected with the virus without being able to trace how or \nwhere they became infected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Coronavirus <\/strong> &#8212; a family of common viruses that cause illness, including the common cold and seasonal flu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>COVID-19<\/strong> &#8212; a new (novel) version of the coronavirus. COVID-19 stands for <strong>Co<\/strong>rona <strong>Vi<\/strong>rus&nbsp;<strong>D<\/strong>isease of 20<strong>19<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Deep cleaning<\/strong> &#8212; the neutralization and removal of a\n dangerous pathogens; it involves first washing and then disinfecting \nall surfaces that could potentially spread the contagion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Direct contact<\/strong> &#8212; the result of coming within six \nfeet of an infected person.&nbsp; In some areas of the world, tests for \ncoronavirus are only given if the person in question has been in direct \ncontact with another person who has tested positive for COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Drive through testing<\/strong> &#8212; a strategic approach in \nwhich Individuals remain in their vehicles while medical staff in \nprotective gear administer a swab test for COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Flattening the curve<\/strong> &#8212; slowing down the spread of \nthe virus so that hospitals and supporting infrastructure do not become \noverwhelmed due to having too many sick patients at the same time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fomite<\/strong> &#8212; an inanimate object or surface that a virus uses as a temporary host.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Hand hygiene<\/strong> &#8212; a well-established medical protocol\n for hand washing in which soap and\/or alcohol-based sanitizer is used \nto reduce the transmission of harmful pathogens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Herd immunity<\/strong> &#8212; a tipping point at which time \nenough people in a population have become immune to the virus through \nvaccine or recovery from illness that it slows the spread of the \ncontagion to an acceptable level.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Incubation<\/strong> &#8212; the time it takes for symptoms to \nappear once a person is infected.&nbsp;According to the CDC, the new \ncoronavirus has an incubation period of 2-14 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Infodemic <\/strong> &#8212; a situation in which the general public is overloaded with conflicting information from a wide variety of sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Intermittent distancing<\/strong> &#8212; periodically limiting social interactions in specific geographical areas to prevent a resurgence of infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Medical face mask<\/strong> &#8212; facial covering intended to protect caregivers and health-care workers against droplet-transmitted pathogens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>PAPR (Powered&nbsp;Air-Purifying Respirator)<\/strong> &#8212; a \nfull-body suit with helmet that healthcare workers must wear when \ntreating patients who have tested positive for coronavirus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>PUI (Person Under Investigation)<\/strong> &#8212; someone who has exhibited symptoms of COVID-19 but has not yet tested positive for the virus.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>PUM (Person under Monitoring)<\/strong> &#8212; someone who \nappears to be healthy but has recently been in direct contact with \nanother person who has symptoms or has tested positive for the virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>PPE (personal protective equipment)<\/strong> &#8212; any type of mask or gloves worn to provide protection from communicable illnesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Physical distancing<\/strong> \u2013 staying six feet (or two meters) away from other people in order to prevent or slow the spread of infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Regional Health Information Organization (RHIO)<\/strong> &#8212; a\n group of organizations within a specific area that share \nhealthcare-related information electronically according to accepted \nhealthcare information technology (<a href=\"https:\/\/searchhealthit.techtarget.com\/definition\/Health-IT-information-technology\">HIT<\/a>) standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Respiratory hygiene<\/strong> &#8212; covering your mouth and nose\n during a cough or sneeze. Respiratory hygiene should immediately be \nfollowed by&nbsp;hand hygiene to reduce the virus\u2019 ability to spread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Self-isolation<\/strong> &#8212; staying away from the rest of the\n population for at least two weeks after experiencing symptoms or \ntesting positive for the virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Self-quarantine<\/strong> \u2013 staying away from the rest of population even though there is no sign of illness. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Shelter in place<\/strong> &#8212; government mandate for people \nin a specific geographical area to remain at home except for conducting \nessential activities like grocery shopping &#8212; or performing a job that \nrequires a person\u2019s physical presence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Social distancing<\/strong> &#8212; limiting social interactions to less than ten people in order to prevent or slow the spread of infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>State of emergency<\/strong> &#8212; a declaration that gives government officials the authority to take extra measures to protect the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Telecommuting<\/strong> &#8212; the ability for an <a href=\"https:\/\/searchenterprisedesktop.techtarget.com\/news\/252480262\/Coronavirus-pandemic-5-remote-work-tips-for-IT\">employee to complete work assignments<\/a> from outside the traditional workplace by using telecommunications tools such as email, phone, chat and video apps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>WHO (World Health Organization)<\/strong> &#8212; the part of the United Nations that is responsible for sharing information related to healthcare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Virus<\/strong> &#8212; a type of germ or microbe that requires a  host because it is incapable of replicating on its own.
