Dell part numbers

To locate your Dell part number is sometimes difficult, and some parts have multiple part numbers on them, leading to extra confusion. Usually a Dell part number contains 5 alphanumeric characters, in the next images you’ll see some examples on how to find your part number. Tekmart Africa  provides a complete catalog of parts for Dell computers, Servers and printers including service parts and upgrades.

This is how a standard PN looks like.

Here a Dell PN with an OEM LCD Part Number in the same label.

This PN was found on a system board.

Another part number, this time on a power supply. In the next image you’ll see a complete detail about a Dell PN and its parts.

There are some other numbers, but they are not on a label, sometimes a string with 7 numbers (311-4712) or a number starting with a capital A followed for 7 digits (A7022339), an example of some Dell certified memory here.

Like most manufacturers, Dell has a unique approach to parts numbering for its computer platform. By most observations, Dell will use the best available deal at the time for its internal parts and components, giving them a unique and competitive pricing edge. While this is great for self-maintainers by giving them many options for replacement parts, it also causes confusion with regards to making sure the correct replacement part is sourced.

A likely reason that they do this is because internally, even Dell is not sure what exact part number they will be shipping you at this point. In many cases, the same part will have different part numbers. A perfect example of this is how part numbers HT954, G8774, FW956, HR200, N226K and YP778 are all a Seagate Model ST3300555SS 300GB 10K SAS Hard Drive

This can raise some concerns for customers who want the exact same drive because of the firmware, the controller being used, or other issues in regards to where the drive is being used (such as an EqualLogic storage array).

Additionally, when ordering hard drives from Dell, the drive does not come with the drive tray. Crazy right? The drives typically come without a tray and must be ordered ala-carte because the same drive part number can be used in multiple systems.

Another common concern for Dell parts is the cabling for the Perc and SAS controller cards. The Perc and SAS controller cards can be used in multiple servers as well so it’s important to know which server the controller is going into to make sure the correct cables are supplied.

Extra care should be used when making these orders so you know exactly what it is you are purchasing. Is it a card only? A card with cables? Do you also need a battery?

With this new knowledge, you should be able to easily search for and understand any of our current Dell inventory found here.
