Key points to note on these 01017F600-000-G NetApp HDD adapters / interposers:-
Scenario:
You have acquired OEM rebranded HDD or SSD from major storage vendor such as NetApp, EMC, or even HP, and find out that the drive that you've purchased will not initialized in windows. The main reason is that the drive come formatted from the factory with a non standard sector size of 520B or 528B, and windows refused to initialized drive other than the normal 512B or 4Kb.
Now, this circuit board sits between the HD connector and the backplane.
Generally, SATA drives connected using the interposer should appear to the system as SAS drives. The interposer preserves signal quality in backplane implementations while providing additional buffer and multiplexer services that enable active-active access (dual path controller redundancy).
These interposers will provide the communication for SATA drives when connecting to a NetApp storage backplanes that can run either SAS or SATA drives. The carrier is the same, but only the SATA drives have the interposer board within the carrier.
The NetApp interposer works as the interface to allow communication to the drive when the carrier is connected to the backplane.
Additionally, SAS, because it has a SCSI base, began with a rich set of diagnostics and control not available in the base of ATA. As a result, when mixing SATA and SAS, it is necessary to make the SATA drive appear to be a SAS drive.
These NetApp interposer chips provide exactly that service.
