RAID Cards

A RAID controller is a type of storage component that manages the disk drives in a RAID infrastructure. It provides the physical disk drives as logical units to the computer or server managing the RAID infrastructure.

A RAID controller is also known as a disk array controller.

A RAID controller typically provides grouped logical disk space to the operating system and other applications.

RAID controllers are classified based on:

  •   ::  RAID level they support
  •   ::  Number of internal or external ports
  •   ::  Drive types (SAS/SATA/PATA)
  •   ::  Number of drives it can support
  •   ::  Front-end and back-end interfaces
  •   ::  Native cache memory

The front-end interface of the RAID controller enables communication with the server host adapter, whereas the back-end interface communicates and manages the underlying disks.
