UPS-Uninterruptible Power Supply
An Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) is a backup power system designed to ensure continuous power for various electronic devices. In addition to providing emergency power, most UPS systems also condition incoming power, helping to protect sensitive electronic equipment by leveling out sags and surges. The UPS has a built-in rechargeable battery that instantly provides power when the main supply is interrupted, preventing data loss. In the event of a prolonged power failure, the UPS allows enough time for data to be saved and for a controlled system shutdown. If an alternative power source, such as a generator, is available, the battery will keep the system running until the secondary power source is online. Additionally, most UPS devices filter the power supply, limiting the detrimental effects of electrical disturbances like "spikes" and "noise."
Types of UPS Systems:-
-
Single-Conversion Systems
These are more efficient than double-conversion devices but provide less protection. They are suitable for loads that can tolerate some level of power failure. The UPS runs on battery power until the AC input returns to normal or the battery runs out, whichever occurs first. -
Standby Power System (SPS)
Commonly used to protect POS equipment and individual workstations, Standby UPSs operate on utility power until a problem is detected. Once an issue is identified, the system switches to battery power to continue operation. -
Line Interactive UPS
These are widely used in network environments, ranging from small networks to enterprise applications. Line Interactive UPS systems regulate the input voltage before passing it through to the protected equipment, adjusting voltage levels as necessary. -
Double-Conversion On-line UPS
While less efficient, double-conversion UPS systems offer the highest level of protection. They isolate critical loads from raw utility power completely, ensuring that IT equipment receives only clean, reliable electricity. These systems continually process power twice during normal operation, offering the best protection for mission-critical systems. -
Multi-Mode Systems
More expensive than single or double-conversion systems, multi-mode systems offer a combination of both technologies. These systems provide an optimal balance of efficiency and protection, making them a great choice for companies seeking both high performance and reliability.
