In electronics and telecommunications, a transmitter (or radio transmitter) is an electronic device that generates radio waves via an antenna. It produces a radio frequency alternating current, which is applied to the antenna, causing it to radiate radio waves. Transmitters are essential components in any device that communicates via radio, such as radio and television broadcasting stations, cell phones, walkie-talkies, wireless computer networks, Bluetooth devices, garage door openers, and two-way radios used in aircraft, ships, spacecraft, radar systems, and navigational beacons.
The term "transmitter" typically refers to equipment that generates radio waves for communication or radiolocation purposes, such as radar and navigational transmitters. Devices that generate radio waves for heating or industrial use, such as microwave ovens or diathermy equipment, are not usually called transmitters, even though they share similar circuits. In common usage, the term often specifically refers to broadcast transmitters, which include not only the transmitter itself but also the antenna and the facility housing the equipment, such as an FM radio transmitter or a television transmitter.
