This part is a 2.5-inch to 3.5-inch HDD/SSD Adapter Caddy. It allows you to securely fit a 2.5" Solid State Drive (SSD) or laptop hard drive into the larger 3.5" drive bays found in HP high-end workstations.

  • ::Function: Converts a 3.5" drive bay to accept a 2.5" SATA or SAS drive.
  • ::Design: Tool-free/Screwless (usually features a "squeeze and slide" mechanism).
  • ::Interface: Pass-through SATA/SAS connector (it ensures the smaller drive's ports line up perfectly with the workstation's backplane).

Compatibility

This bracket is a staple for HP Z-Series Workstations, including:

  • ::Z-Series: Z220, Z230, Z420, Z620, Z820
  • ::Later Generations: Z440, Z640, Z840
  • ::EliteDesk: Certain 800 G1/G2 Tower models

Why and when you might need this:-

If you just bought a new SATA SSD (like a Samsung Evo for example) to speed up an older HP Workstation, you'll find the SSD is too small to fit into the Z-series drive "drawers." This adapter acts as a shell that makes the SSD the same size and shape as a standard large desktop hard drive.

1. How the Adapter Works

The 668261-001 is a "pass-through" bracket. You slide your 2.5-inch SSD into the bracket, and it aligns the SSD's SATA and power ports to match the position of a standard 3.5-inch drive.

  • No Screws Needed: Most versions of this bracket use small plastic pins or "pressure fits" to hold the SSD.
  • The "Squeeze" Test: Once the SSD is in the bracket, you then slide the whole assembly into the workstation's green or black drive "drawers" (the tool-less trays that come with the computer).

2. Common "Gotcha": Mounting Screws:-

If your workstation is missing the isolation grommets (the silver screws with black rubber rings), the bracket won't stay in the drive bay—it will just slide around.

  • Check the Chassis: HP usually hides "spare" mounting screws behind the front bezel or on the inside of the side panel.
  • The Part Number: If you need those specific screws, they are often sold as 450712-001.

Installation Steps:-

  1. Slide the SSD into the 668261-001 adapter until the ports are flush with the back.
  2. Snap the adapter into the large plastic drive tray (the one with the handle).
  3. Slide the tray into the workstation's drive cage until it clicks.
  4. Connect the SATA/Power cables (or just push it in if your workstation has a built-in backplane).
