Key points to note on these 512735-001 HP 4V 13.5A-HR Cache Controller Batteries:-

Why Do RAID Controllers Need Batteries?

Any RAID Controller should have a battery to avoid data loss when there is a power outage on the mainline. The batteries can be smart cache, capacitors, or lithium-ion batteries. When the main power goes out before the data write to the cache is completed, it can be lost.

As a result, these controllers, not necessarily RAID controllers, switch to the backup battery to complete the write sequence. You should ensure that the battery controller is in good working condition.

Controller Battery by Voltage

Different servers have different controller models. That means that the controller batteries also must have varying specifications. Apart from the physical size, the voltage rating is a crucial factor to consider. There are different battery ratings for different systems.

For example, you will need 4.3V batteries for DL580 servers and 4.8V batteries for P-series controllers. Similarly, the 7.2V battery is for HP ProLiant BI460C servers.

Check the voltage rating of the controller battery to ensure that it matches that which your system has. Any deviation can lead to costly disasters.

These controller batteries above are application-specific. These 13.5A-HR Cache Controller Batteries above are specifically for the EVA 4000, EVA 6000 and EVA8000 storage systems.

Below are the steps of removing and replacing these cache battery modules:-

Controller cache battery removal

  1.   ::  Review the safety considerations before performing the steps listed below.

Always verify controller cache battery failure before starting repair.

CAUTION: Failure to comply with the precautions could result in damage to your product or loss of data.

  2.   ::  Grasp the bezel at both ends and pull it away from the controller.

  3.   ::  Check the battery status indicators. The battery fault indicator should be on.

  4.   ::  While moving the battery-mounting latch to the right, pull the battery out of the enclosure. Support the battery with both hands as you remove it.

Controller cache battery replacement

  1.   ::  Position the battery as high in the slot as possible, then slide the battery into the enclosure until it is fully seated and the mounting latch engages.

  2.   ::  Check the battery status indicators:

    •        ::  During the first minute, both status indicators may be on or flashing.

    •        ::  The top status indicator should then begin flashing, indicating the battery is charging. It may take several hours for a new battery to fully charge. The fault indicator should be off during charging.

Always verify proper controller cache battery operation.

  3.   ::  Install the front bezel on the enclosure by pressing it firmly into place.

  4.   ::  Great. You're done ! You have successfully replaced a cache controller battery on an HP 4/6/8000 Enterprise Virtual Array unit.
