This Dell card, with SKU: GY1TD (also known as 0GY1TD), is an NVMe PCIe SSD Extender / Expansion card used in certain Dell PowerEdge servers.

The  card provides a way to convert one of those PCIe fast lanes into connections for multiple NVMe drives that fit into the standard 2.5-inch drive bays.

Its primary function is to allow Dell servers that don't natively have built-in NVMe drive bays to utilize high-performance NVMe Solid State Drives (SSDs)-NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) is a communication interface that allows SSDs to connect directly to the PCIe bus, offering significantly faster data transfer speeds and lower latency compared to SAS or SATA SSDs.

They plug into a standard PCIe x16 slot in the server. It then "bifurcates" or splits this single PCIe x16 connection into four separate PCIe lanes (typically x4 lanes each).

These four PCIe lanes are routed via these specialized cables (often Dell part K9TVP) to a hot-swap backplane in the front of the server. This backplane has bays designed to accommodate 2.5-inch U.2 NVMe SSDs. Essentially, the card acts as a bridge, allowing the server's CPU to directly communicate with the NVMe drives through the PCIe bus.

This then allows organizations to leverage the incredible speed of NVMe for their most demanding applications (databases, virtualization, analytics) without having to replace their entire server infrastructure.
