The SKU:724864-B21 is an HPE part number corresponding to the HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen9 2SFF (Small Form Factor) Front/Rear Drive Bay Kit. It is a storage enablement kit used to add two additional 2.5-inch drive bays to a server.

This kit is highly versatile because it can be installed in two different locations depending on your server configuration:

  • ::Front Installation: It can be installed in the Universal Media Bay (which requires part 724865-B21) at the front of the server. This is common for users who need a few extra drives while keeping the front of the server mostly open for air or optical drives.

  • ::Rear Installation: It can be installed at the rear of the chassis above the power supplies.

  • ::Constraint: Rear installation is generally only supported if you have the 24-SFF or 12-LFF front-end chassis.
  • ::Constraint: It may limit the use of certain PCIe slots or require specific high-performance fans/specific CPU wattage (usually under 160W) due to thermal limits.

Use Case

This kit is most commonly used to create a mirrored OS boot volume (RAID 1). By placing the operating system on these two rear drives, you leave all the primary front-loading bays available for high-capacity data storage.

Caveat:-

If you are installing this in the rear of the server, it occupies the space typically used by the Secondary PCIe Riser. You cannot have both a full 3-slot secondary riser and this rear drive cage installed simultaneously.
