Key points to note on these 00E6077 IBM DS8000 24-Slot SFF Gen 2 HDD Enclosures:-
The IBM EXP24S 5887 is a 2U rack-mounted I/O expansion drawer that provides 24 hot-swap SFF (Small Form Factor) SAS hard disk drive (HDD) or solid-state drive (SSD) slots, designed for use with IBM Power Systems. The drawer uses two EIA (Electronic Industries Alliance) units of rack space and is equipped with redundant AC power supplies and two power cords for reliability and high availability.
The EXP24S is compatible with a wide range of IBM Power Systems, including models such as the 8202-E4B, 8205-E6C, 8231-E1C, 8247-21L, 8284-22A, 8408-44E, and 9179-MHB, among others. It can be used for configurations running AIX, Linux, or VIOS, with the EXP24S offering flexibility in how the bays are configured. Specifically, the drawer can be used with four sets of six bays, two sets of 12 bays, or a single set of 24 bays for non-IBM i workloads, and as one set of 24 bays for IBM i workloads.
The EXP24S 5887 connects to the server via SAS controllers, which could be a SAS PCI-X or PCIe adapter, or a pair of adapters. Alternatively, the drawer can also connect to an embedded SAS controller in the server using SAS cables. The attachment is made through SAS Y or X cables, with options for distances of up to 3 meters, such as feature ECBT or ECBU. The drawers can be attached to PCIe SAS adapters or SAS ports on the rear of the server. In this setup, up to 14 EXP24S drawers can be connected in a chain, depending on the configuration.
Regarding drive type compatibility, the EXP24S can accommodate either SSDs or HDDs, but not both types in the same drawer. The choice of drive type depends on the capabilities of the adapter running the bays. It is also important to note that the EXP24S rails offer adjustability for rack depth, ranging from 25.25 to 29.875 inches, to ensure a secure fit in various rack configurations.
In terms of migration, clients transitioning from older generation servers may have previously used I/O expansion drawers such as the GX++ attached feature 5802 or 5877 PCIe 12X I/O drawers with PCIe Gen 1 slots. While most PCIe adapters from these older drawers can be transferred to newer servers running the EXP24S, the 5802 and 5877 drawers themselves are not supported on newer Power Systems POWER8 based servers.
Installation Tips:-
- :: The EXP24S 5887 can typically be installed while the system is running, especially if using a Hardware Management Console (HMC), System Director Management Console (SDMC), or when running IBM i with a single partition.
- :: However, if the EXP24S drawer needs to be physically moved, the system must be powered down, even if a management console is used.
- :: This flexibility, along with the robust power supply and cable management features, makes the EXP24S a versatile and reliable solution for expanding storage in IBM Power Systems.
